Follow up and take action. Most conversations, especially those regarding major events or social justice topics, will happen incrementally over time. Follow-up and action will look different depending on the topic and age of your children. Sometimes follow-up includes clarifying misinformation and gaps your child may have on a topic. It could also include activities you do together, such as reading a book with your child that can help you both process something powerful or painful. Whatever your follow-up looks like, it is vital, as your attention and action will help to keep your childâs anxiety and stress to a minimum. Follow-up offers us and our kids an opportunity for growth. Brainstorm a list of solutions with them. Talk about what could work (or not work) and why. This kind of thought and intention will pay off exponentially as they grow to become change agents in the world. Donât let the fear of not knowing what to say get in the way of having important conversations.
